Organizations want to hire only the best-fit employees, pretty much the same way a university admits only those students who are best suited for the courses. Using the right assessment tools is critical to these goals.

The US Labor Department reported a rise of 150,000 in non-farm employment in October 2023. A study by Ernst & Young found that 81% of organizations are experiencing a shortage of skilled workers. These numbers are a reminder of how modern-age tools can make the hiring process efficient and the assessment of student learning more objective.

A large number of online assessment platforms have emerged to meet such requirements, and choosing the right one can be challenging. Below is our list of the top 15 online assessment companies. We have carefully evaluated each of them so that you can find the ideal online assessment tool for your needs.

Factors used to evaluate online assessment companies

While a host of factors are required to make a company stand out in a list of assessment tools or even educational platforms, certain key features matter more than the rest.

Our current list of skill assessment companies principally focuses on the five factors to rate them:

  1. Creating skill tests: Each organization has unique requirements. How easy is it to modify and customize existing tests of the platform?
  2. Support required: Is the learning curve sharp? How friendly is the UI and UX? Do you need to return to their support teams often?
  3. Pricing plans: Does the assessment tool deliver value against the price?
  4. Integrations and security: These must be a given. Each solution must meet the minimum criteria.
  5. Overall performance: Where does the assessment software stand in its overall effectiveness and efficiency?

1. EdisonOS

  5. The performance metrics and uniquely personalized insights make EdisonOS one of the most reliable tools for SAT preparation.

Areas of improvement

The testing tool is rich with features compared to nearly all its competitors. That means while competitors may appear quite easy to use, EdisonOS, at first sight, looks slightly complex. But soon you’ll realize that it’s bigger and richer which is why it looked a little challenging.

If you’ve never used an assessment platform before, you’ll probably need a little time navigating EdisonOS. Other than that, there are no limitations worth mentioning.

3. MeritTrac

MeritTrac

As a recruiter, you are looking for assessment data that’s consistent and reliable. That’s one more reason for you to consider MeritTrac as the best online assessment platform to use for your organization.

MeritTrac brings you a suite of desirable features you’d expect from a great assessment software. It allows you to create online assessments so that you can identify the right people with the precise skill sets you are looking for. You can trust MeritTrac for end-to-end assessment solutions: creating tests, administering them, proctoring them, and evaluating them.

As a leading online assessment software, MeritTrac has both a reasonably easy interface and multiple pricing plans (including a perpetual license). From cognitive ability measuring and behavioral assessments to pre-employment assessments and domain evaluations, you’ll find their interactive platform meets all your requirements.

Basic features

Even when you’re looking to fill specialized roles, MeritTrac will remain on your list of the leading online assessment tools.

  1. Search: Has a resume search feature for your convenience
  2. Domain: To identify the extent to which a candidate’s skills match industry standards
  3. Anti-cheating: Sophisticated mechanism to prevent malpractices

What’s unique

  1. MeritTrac provides you with multiple test types. That means if you choose MeritTrac, you’ll have no reason to look beyond.
  2. Data protection is often a concern with corporations and small businesses alike. MeritTrac makes sure your data is in really safe hands.
  3. You get NLP models that are strong in autoscoring the online tests. That includes evaluation based on structure and typos.

Areas of improvement

MeritTrac strives to provide a better, stronger platform to its clients. However, there are some areas that MeritTrac needs to work on to be placed among the leading online assessment software.

First, tracking a candidate’s performance needs reviewing. You’ll need a workaround or two to figure out how you wish to rate the candidate’s performance.

Secondly, there are some areas where the number of questions is rather limited. This is exactly why rating test-takers in a few particular areas isn’t as reliable as the rest of the technologies.

Mettl has emerged as a reliable and secure platform for your entire talent lifecycle, from hiring to upskilling.

Basic features

When your goal is to carry out remote assessments as easily and as accurately as possible, you want a sturdy yet flexible platform. Mettl makes a serious attempt in trying to fit into this role. Here are the basic features of Mettl

  1. Understanding: Graphical presentation of test results for easy understanding

  2. As an assessment platform, Mettl gives you accurate results for tests on skill gap analysis and training effectiveness.
  3. If you’re planning remote proctored examinations, you’ll want to consider the AI-powered solution from Mettl.

Areas of improvement

The online exam software of Mettl comes with two clear challenges.

One, the UX is definitely for beginners. You’ll need to invest a good deal of time getting familiar with all its features and functionalities.

And two, for candidates it can sometimes get confusing when they are asked to choose between modules. The layout would do well with some revision.

5. Adaface

Adaface

Organizations keen to perfect their assessment process choose a solution that covers a lot of ground. Adaface is one of the alternatives you should explore, given its stability, range of features, and flexibility.

What’s interesting about Adaface is the way you can make the assessments engaging and contextual. No matter what your goals, when you conduct assessments online, these factors matter a great deal.

Basic features

Adaface helps you conduct candidate skills assessments at different levels for real, on-the-job skills. That way, you’ll find people who best fit the positions you’re looking to fill.

  1. Coding test: Evaluate coding skills with real-life programming abilities
  2. Wide range: Tests available for 500+ skills
  3. Applicant Tracking System integration: Easily administer tests through ATS

What’s unique

  1. Their Conversational Assessment uses intelligent chatbots, which perform the basic screening for you and cut down your work.
  2. They have an AI-powered resume parser that will pull out resumes that mention the skills or experience you are looking for. Not all assessment tools provide this feature.
  3. They claim their platform is built using deep and proven research. That makes even remote assessments reliable and effective.

Areas of improvement

The part where you try to add questions of your own, Adaface, like many skill assessment companies in India, throws up some challenges which need some workarounds. Apparently, complete personalization is a challenge many online assessment tools face.

Another area of improvement that you’ll probably notice with Adaface is the readymade tests. On the one hand, some questions provide what appears to be insufficient information; on the other, it’s not easy adding your bits to the pre-existing questions. Otherwise, that would have made formative assessments much better.

G2 Ratings

4.6 out of 5 (43 ratings)

Subscription plans

The entry-level plan is the Individual Plan, which is US$180/year for 12 credits.

Their credits are based on the kind of tests you use and the number of candidates who take the test. For instance, a readymade test costs you 10 credits, while each candidate taking the test would be 1 credit.

Realistically, if you carry out online assessments for 100 candidates a year, you’ll probably need the Pro Plan, which is $500/year.

A free trial is available, and you won’t need a credit card for the trial.

6. CoCubes

CoCubes

As an online assessment software used by many leading companies, CoCubes is another testing solution you should check out. In CoCubes, you’ll find an advanced proctoring solution along with a strong testing platform.

As one of the top online assessment companies in India, CoCubes comes with all basic features you’d expect. They deploy a big number of assessments every year, and this experience contributes to their increasing expertise.

Basic features

  1. Variety: Gamified assessments for recruitment, selection and development
  2. Corporates and academia: Evaluations and tests for organizations as well as colleges
  3. Languages: Testing available in multiple languages

What’s unique

  1. Its proctoring capabilities can, using AI, identify and flag malpractices that include object detection and even impersonation.
  2. You can select from a talent pool of over 300,000 candidates who have already been assessed by CoCubes, making your hiring managers’ job easier and the hiring process more reliable.
  3. They have built a robust proctoring environment within which students can test their employability. This can also complement pre-hire skill assessments conducted by business organizations.

Areas of improvement

As an organization that aims to help you evaluate employee performance, their website offers rather limited information. For instance, you can see they offer an online platform for skill assessment, but whether they offer any personalized advice is not clear.

Next, their interface is a bit dated; things could have been made more intuitive and easier. Afterall, educational platforms that allow customization shouldn’t take lots of effort for testers.

7. Wheebox

Wheebox

An online assessment platform with a range of secure testing solutions and remote proctoring, Wheebox ranks high in our list of skill assessment companies in India. It is flexible and easy to scale, which means it will easily adjust based on your changing requirements.

When you want to conduct tailored assessments for different employees and different job roles, and also find the effectiveness of your training, a learning management system like Wheebox is what you want.

Basic features

  1. 350+ tests: An online assessment software with a big range of tests
  2. Minimize bias: Pre-hiring tests that help you screen and select the right candidates
  3. Campus hiring: Easy, automated process makes efficient hiring and empowers organizations

What’s unique

  1. Their proctoring with a 360-degree room scan ensures that there is no scope for malpractice. This is important for proctoring and assessment tools.
  2. They use AI services from Microsoft for face recognition, in addition to their in-house AI solution for voice and face tracking, to further reinforce anti-malpractice measures.
  3. Wheebox uses end-to-end encryption of not only data and results but also images and logs. In addition to data protection, this raises the ability of the online assessment software to help testers respond to legal challenges from candidates.

Areas of improvement

Across all the online assessment tools we studied, we found hiring managers weren’t impressed with the readymade tests, and Wheebox is no exception. Some tests evaluated the key skills only partially, and a few test questions weren’t framed accurately.

Next, the software platform for assessment has room for improvement in being user-friendly. An assessment software needs to remember that large businesses watch the human hours their teams spend on software; the more user-friendly the assessment tool is, the wider its acceptance. That’s another thing users feel about Wheebox.

8. Xobin

Xobin

Another leading skill assessment platform you’d like to explore is Xobin. They aim to serve both corporates and educational institutions, even edtech companies. Their assessments can be administered on computers, laptops, and even mobile devices.

Like most assessment tools, Xobin helps you assess employee and student performance through tests with both analytical and multiple-choice questions. You can rely on their online exam solution and great support for all your performance evaluation requirements.

Basic features

  1. Combination: Offers remote assessments for both technical and non-technical skills
  2. Bifurcation: Online assessments are divided into skill-based assessments and role-based assessments
  3. Integrations: Webhooks and APIs available make the process less tech-heavy at your end

What’s unique

  1. Xobin has an LLM-based answer evaluation system that uses generative AI to rate the quality of answers received during candidate skills assessments. This can potentially save a lot of your hiring manager’s time.
  2. They have over 1,000 pre-built tests that will help you evaluate applicants’ skills over a wide range of areas, from marketing to IT and language proficiency to supply chain management. That makes it an important online assessment tool for companies of all sizes.
  3. In addition to being a reliable online exam software, they have an automated video interview solution too. That’s a plus compared to other assessment software.

Areas of improvement

If you wish to add your own questions and create customized tests, you may not be able to do it fully yourself and may need their support. That’d be time-consuming and slow down things.

A few reviews mentioned that their skill-gap analysis isn’t fully satisfactory, which is certainly important for any online assessment platform.

Finally, while their integrations are useful, some of them may require a degree of technical knowledge on your part, which could make the process a tad challenging.

G2 Ratings

9. HackerRank

HackerRank

HackerRank is an assessment tool that’s focused on supporting the IT and software industry. Many organizations agree that it is effective and reliable for their pre-employment assessment needs.

If you’re looking for some of the best online assessment platforms for developer skills,  HackerRank deserves a merit position in your search. Its reporting and analytics help you arrive at data-driven decisions and considerably reduce the time your hiring managers need to spend on each stage of screening without compromising quality.

Basic features

  1. Tests and interviews: Helps you in administering tests and conducting interviews
  2. AI-integrated: Comes with assessments that are strengthened by artificial intelligence that promises to raise your hiring productivity
  3. Current skill assessment: Offers evaluations to help you understand your existing skill pool, rate employee performance, and fix skill gaps

What’s unique

  1. Their tests balance the question types very well. Each test includes questions from three broad categories: coding, project-based questions, and general questions.
  2. Their Interviews feature allows you to work with applicants in real time to review and improve the code the applicant is submitting. This is supported by a video.
  3. Customers, no matter what plan they opt for, can enjoy on-demand training videos, recorded webinars, articles, and documentation.

Areas of improvement

A few users have mentioned in their reviews that questions don’t seem to have been updated for a while. If that’s true across the major tests, that’s a substantial limitation, because assessment and educational platforms cannot afford not revising their questions regularly.

A similar challenge for this online assessment platform is regarding the addition of new features. The pace at which they add new functionalities needs improvement too.

Finally, the UI could have been better. Currently, some of the other assessment tools on this list have significantly better UI.

G2 Ratings

4.5 out of 5 (369 reviews)

The smallest of their pricing plans, which is the Starter Pack, starts at $1,200 per year. If you have bigger requirements, you can ask for a customized plan where you use their additional integrations, SSO, and more.
